Johnny Appleseed Day

Our first-grade classes celebrated Johnny Appleseed day in honor of John Chapman who was born on September 26, 1774. Students rotated from classroom to classroom where they learned about apples, tasted and voted for their favorites, enjoyed delicious apple pie, and created their own “tin cap” to replicate the one worn by Johnny.

It seems appropriate that our young students study Johnny Appleseed, at one time his life was saved by an 8-year-old boy.  “One morning [Johnny] was picking hops in a tree when he fell and caught his neck in the fork of the tree. Shortly after he fell, one of his helpers, 8-year-old John White, found him struggling in the tree. Unable to get him out of the tree, young John White cut the tree down, saving Chapman’s life.”*
