In ancient Russia, villagers would hold a festival every year in an attempt to get the birds to come back after Winter–believing that the birds brought Spring with them when they came. They would sing songs about birds, tie treats for the birds around their fenceposts, and paint themselves to look like birds/dress like birds/hold banners with giant birds painted on them. For our modern version, we participated in singing games about birds, made pine cone bird feeders, created vests and painted our faces!
We had a huge turnout for this afterschool activity. Thanks go out to Mr. McKinney and his team for all the arrangements and all the parents, grandparents, teachers and especially the students who participated.
If we’re lucky spring will come to stay!
