Assembly Teaches Native American Traditions

Lakeview students were able to experience one of the schools favorite assemblies in November. All the grades were gathered in the gym as we learned about the traditions and dances of some of our very own students who are from the Navajo Tribe. We learned the difference between a costume, something you dress up as, and regalia, which is “a powerful mode of self-expression that blends historical and modern dress. Worn with responsibility and pride, the clothing represents community traditions and personal tastes. A dancer’s powwow outfit is a collection of items that reflect their lives, interests, and family background.” (From the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage website.)

A favorite of the students, the dances that were performed were beautiful and exciting. Enjoy some pictures from the assembly! We are so lucky to have the opportunity to learn from students and their families in our very own school!
